Over the years, factors such as pregnancy,
nursing, weight loss and the force
of gravity take their toll on a woman's
breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity,
the breasts often lose their shape
and firmness and begin to sag. A breast
lift, or mastopexy, raises and reshapes
sagging breasts. Breast lift surgery
can also reduce the size of the areola,
the darker skin surrounding the nipple.
After breastfeeding, the breasts may
shrink, but the skin may not. This
causes the breasts to droop. In order
to restore the volume and lift the
nipple back into its pre-pregnancy
position, a breast augmentation may
be done in conjunction with the breast
lift.
The incisions
used, and the resulting scarring,
depend upon the technique used. Mastopexy incisions can
be as small as a line around the upper
part of the areola, or as large as
an anchor-shaped line that runs vertically
down from the areola and across the
fold under the breast.
In order to bring the entire body
into better proportion, a tummy tuck
may also be performed at the same time
as a breast lift.
