Dr. Cynthia Goodman uses the new Long Pulse or Nd-Yag laser to eliminate unsightly red marks or spider veins and rosacea (red facial flushing) . The laser light is selectively absorbed by the spider veins. In most cases, this results in collapse of the blood vessel wall and immediate disappearance of the spider vein. In larger vessels, the blood coagulates and the body absorbs the vein until it finally disappears over a 4-6 week period. On average, two or three treatments are needed at 8-week intervals.
The sensation is similar to that of a rubber band being snapped on the skin. Some patients elect to have topical anesthetic cream applied one hour before the treatment. Treatments last about 15 to 30 minutes. After the treatment, there is mild skin tenderness, redness and swelling which can last several hours. Occasionally, some blistering can occur. This can be covered with make up and will fade away in about one week. Vigorous exercise, alcohol and excessive heat exposure (i.e. hot tubs, saunas, and hot baths) should be avoided for 48 hours after treatment. Use of any harsh skin cleansers or skin products with vitamin C, fruit acids, or Retin A 48 hours before and after the treatment should be avoided. All other routine activities can be resumed immediately. Regular use of sunscreen will help prevent new spider veins from developing.
