Breast reconstruction is a highly personal and individualized process that requires extensive consultation. For women who are considering a mastectomy, breast reconstruction restores a natural, symmetrical appearance to the chest and boosts self-confidence. A new breast, nipple, and areola complex are reconstructed to resemble the woman’s natural breast as closely as possible in shape, size and position. This may be performed utilizing a variety of techniques including:
- Tissue expanders & breast implants
- TRAM Flap (abdomen tissue) or DIEP flap (free abdominal tissue)
- Latissimus flap (back tissue)
- Fat grafting
Breast reconstruction can be done immediately at the same time of the mastectomy or delayed after the mastectomy wounds have healed. Defects from a Lumpectomy can also be reconstructed with local tissue flaps or symmetry can be restored by reducing the opposite breast.
